Lot 1444
CILICIA. Ninica-Claudiopolis. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Hemiassarion (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.92 g, 11 h), 2nd to early 3rd century AD. [...] KΛ[A]YΔIO[...]C[...] Hermes standing front, head to left, holding purse in his right hand and caduceus in his left. Rev. Uncertain symbol within wreath. RPC -. Apparently unpublished and unique. Light cleaning scratches on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.
The fragmentary inscription likely refers to one of the cities that adopted the name of Claudius (41-54). It is most probably Ninica-Claudiopolis in Cilicia, a city whose coinage began under Trajan (98-117) and, with some interruptions, continued until the reign of Maximinus (235-238). The coins from Ninica-Claudiopolis exhibit a very distinctive style and craftsmanship; the mixture of Latin and Greek letters is also quite typical and fits well with our piece
